Sanford Maine mill buildings

Millstone Place was built as part of the original Sanford Goodall Textile Mill Complex in 1867 by British-born Thomas Goodall.

Originally the mill spun yarn for mohair plush which was used as upholstery in automobile, railroad, and the furniture industries. It produced camel hair blankets for baby carriages, open air early automobiles, and military fabrics for uniforms and blankets.

Later uses were for the trademark Palm Beach Suits and Slacks lines. Their early suits from the 1920’s and 30’s blended synthetic materials with wool for suits that would breath and be more comfortable in warmer months. The Sanford mills were the first to begin this type of blending.

The Sanford Goodall Mills were the largest textile mills of their type in the world at that time.
